The most common meal consumed out-of-home is the workday lunch. UK lunch-on-the-go generates 11 billion pieces of single-use packaging every year, most of which can’t be recycled or composted because of contamination and limited infrastructure. Unfortunately, this waste ends up in landfill or worse – in our oceans – with food containers & cutlery making up ~10% of global ocean litter. While 80% of consumers want to reduce plastic waste, most are reluctant to pay the “sustainability premium” through their wallets or time. The only way to avoid waste altogether for individuals to bring-their-own containers, but few attempt this because of the hassle of lugging dirty food bowls around in their work bags.
